Non-Teaching Assistantships

Each year, the English Department awards non-teaching assistantships to graduate students who show the potential for supporting faculty in key activities central to our mission.

In recent years, we have supported the following:

  • A Film Studies graduate assistantship. The student coordinates with Film Studies faculty in facilitating lectures and discussions, scores exams, and is responsible for the maintenance and circulation of film production equipment.
  • A Good Thunder Reading Series graduate assistantship. The student assists in carrying out program operations and activities such as publicity, assessment, book sales, and fundraising.
  • A Native American Literature Symposium graduate assistant. The student assists the faculty director in organizing and marketing efforts for the annual national conference.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in English or related field.
  • Admission to the College of Graduate Studies at Minnesota State University Mankato.
  • Strong English language speaking and writing skills.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with students, faculty, and other Department staff.
  • Enrollment in a minimum of six (6) graduate credits per semester during the assistantship.

How to Apply:
If you are a new graduate student applicant, upload a completed teaching assistantship application package to the same GradCAS system page where you upload program admission materials.

A complete application will include a cover letter detailing your qualifications and a resume.  Additionally, you will be prompted to enter the contact information of two references for letters of recommendation. If you are applying for multiple assistantships, you will likely need separate letters in order to best detail your case for being considered. Please title those separate statements accordingly.

Continuing students, or students who deferred their admission to a graduate program, should submit the above materials by emailing the Graduate Director.
