Graduate Assistantships

Graduate assistantships are funded from several sources. Typically, the program is able to provide several graduate assistantships through the Psychology Department. These are most often ½-time assistantships, which require 10 hours of work per week (as a teaching or research assistant for Psychology Department faculty), a monthly stipend, and 9 credit hours of tuition waived for the academic year.

Since departmental assistantships are limited, applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for a number of other assistantships available elsewhere in the University. Since assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis, applicants enhance the likelihood of receiving an assistantship by applying for several types. A list of available positions is available on the Minnesota State Mankato Human Resources website.

Graduate studeents are also eligible for other types of financial aid such as guaranteed student loans and state and federal work-study employment. Applicants should contact the Financial Aids Office for further information.

Additional Expenses

Since students are expected to participate in a variety of professional activities, additional expenses are incurred. Student membership in professional organizations, attendance at regional and national conferences, and the purchase of malpractice insurance and professional journals should be considered as a necessary educational expense. Costs vary among students according to interests, number of conferences attended, and types of accommodations and travel preferred. However, most students report budget about $1,000 per year for these activities.
