About
The Department of Creative Arts is pleased to announce the installation of artwork by Tehran-born artist, Ziba Rajabi. The exhibition, Recite a Poem When Feeling Hopeless, will be on view through March 21, 2024 at Minnesota State, Mankato’s Conkling Gallery.
According to Rajabi, the exhibition explores the Persian language as a form of sentimental refuge while residing outside her homeland of Iran. The artist writes: “One thinks and feels through language. However, some emotions are not translatable. So, when I feel homesick, I read poetry.” Poetry and calligraphy are two enduring artforms in Iran, and Rajabi’s new work stitches together reassembled calligraphic expressions on brightly colored fabric, creating a quiet and evocative exhibition that translates to all audiences.
Ziba Rajabi (MFA, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville; BFA Sooreh University, Tehran) is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Jerome Foundation Fellowship for Early Career Artists. Her work has been exhibited internationally in museums, galleries, and institutions of higher education.
The exhibition is free and open to the public, Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. There will also be a public lecture March 13th 7-8pm in Ostrander Auditorium followed by an exhibition reception in the Conkling Gallery 8-9pm. Inexpensive paid parking (Flowbird App) is available in front of Nelson Hall on Maywood Avenue or in the visitor parking lot on South Road across from the Centennial Student Union.
