Mission & Goals
Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in School Psychology
The School Psychology Doctoral Program at Minnesota State University, Mankato is fully accredited by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and trains students to attain certification to practice as school psychologists and/or pursue other doctoral level employment such as university teaching. The program consists of 106 semester credits typically completed over five years. Some students who have completed master’s or specialist’s training are admitted with advanced standing. The program is housed in the psychology department and emphasizes (a) data-based decision making, (b) problem-solving, (c) mental health, and (d) prevention.
Goals of the Program
Our program has embraced the training standards of the National Association of School Psychologists as the framework for our professional goals. As such, our goals are to train students who demonstrate the following:
- Data-based decision making and accountability
- Consultation and collaboration skills
- Fluency in providing interventions and instructional support to develop student academic skills
- Fluency in providing intervention and mental health services to develop social and life skills
- Knowledge of schoolwide practices to promote learning
- Fluency in preventative and responsive services
- Fluency in family-school collaboration services
- Knowledge of diversity in development and learning
- Fluency in research and program evaluation
- Legal, ethical, and professional practice
