On Surviving Cancer as a Retirement Activity
After a thirty-year career at MSU, I planned to retire after the 2016-2017 academic year. So much for best laid plans. Instead, I spent that year on sick leave being treated for acute myeloid leukemia. Throughout that time, I composed a memoir narrating my treatment and recovery that was published in the fall of 2018 under the title “How Steve became Ralph: A Cancer/Stem Cell Odyssey (with Jokes).” I have since become involved in the cancer survivor and support community through several speaking engagements and peer patient support roles. For an overview of these activities, see my “Survivor Vita” here. For more, visit my personal website.
