Education:

• Ph.D. in Spanish (Latin American Literature) from the University of Iowa
• M.A. in Spanish from the University of Iowa
• B.A. in Comparative Literature from la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Bogotá, Colombia

Biography:
Duplat considers himself a citizen of the world. He was born in Popayán, a city in the Andes in southern Colombia and traveled with his family outside of the country when he was two months old. Since then, he has not had the opportunity to return to Popayán, and he has been a foreigner for more than half of his life. Prior to becoming a professor, Duplat was an assistant editor for 10 years in Bogotá, working primarily with academic books, literary fiction and poetry. His field of research is modern Latin American literature and culture, with a focus on cultural debates and human rights. He is interested in the theory of narrative transculturation and different theoretical approaches that put greater weight on the social functions of the literary canon. His research projects focus on the intersections between political ideas, cultural debates and cultural productions. He relies primarily on Latin American thinkers like José Carlos Mariátegui, Carlos Quijano, Darcy Ribeiro and Ángel Rama, and also on Marxist theorists like Antonio Gramsci, Raymond Williams and Fredric Jameson.
