Biography:
A native of Tokyo, Japan, Sachi is a Professor in the Department of Communication and Media at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Her research interests include phenomenological and somatosensory experiences of culture, identity, and embodiment. Her scholarship broadly asks the following question: how do we incorporate, internalize, and embody social beliefs, cultural values, and ideological norms? She has written various articles and book chapters on issues related to the embodied politics of transnational identity, the phenomenology of racialized embodiment, and intercultural communication in global contexts. She is a co-author of Globalizing Intercultural Communication: A Reader (Sage, 2016, with Kathryn Sorrells) and Race and the Senses: The Felt Politics of Racial Embodiment (Bloomsbury Academic, forthcoming in 2020, with Christopher Brown). Sachi has received multiple top paper awards and outstanding publication awards from National Communication Association and Central States Communication Association. As an instructor, her teaching style emphasizes active participation, critical thinking, and focused discussion on the course material. In recent years, Sachi developed and taught several special topic courses, including Race and Communication as well as Food, Culture & Identity.
