Financial Assistance

The Department of Sociology and Corrections employs graduate assistants each year. These assistants help with teaching classes, conducting research, advising undergraduates and administering programs. Their status as department members also gives them access to valuable educational and professional opportunities.

All graduate assistants must be full-time graduate students who have been admitted to our graduate program. Full-time graduate assistants work 20 hours per week and receive a current salary of $9,000 for the academic year. They also receive a tuition waiver of up to 18 graduate credits per year and may qualify for in-state tuition rates.

Application forms for graduate assistantships may be found at the link. Once completed, they should be returned directly to the Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Sociology and Corrections. We accept applications year round, but most awards are made in April for the following fall semester. Applications should be received by March 1 for full consideration for these appointments.

Additional funding for some assistantships is provided through Federal work-study funding. Please consult directly with the Graduate Coordinator by February 1 to determine your potential eligibility for these funds.

Other assistantships are available from Student Affairs, the Memorial Library, and the Residential Life offices of the University. Affirmative action graduate assistantships are available for American ethnic minority students. A listing of available graduate assistantships is maintained at the Career Development Center. Completed applications are submitted directly to the department or office offering the assistantship

Other types of financial assistance are available at the Office of Financial Aid.
