ENG 271W: Technical Communication

ENG 4/572: Topics – Antiracist Technical Communication (Dover) 

Online Asynchronous

First session  

 

In this course, we will examine technical communication in the light of the “social justice” turn. To this end, we will be examining the field itself, methodologies and methods, research, and pedagogy. This is a discussion-based, reading/writing-intensive course, and there are no texts to purchase. 

 

ENG 472 is an elective towards the Technical Communication BS and minor. May be repeated under different topics. 

ENG 572 is an elective towards the GC and MS. May be repeated under different topics. 

 

Fall 2025 

ENG 271W: Technical Communication 

There are multiple sections of ENG 271W offered both online and in-person. 

ENG 4/569: Project Management for Technical Communication (Dover) 

Online Synchronous 

T 7-8:30 

4 credits undergrad; 3 credits grad 

 

This course develops project management skills through simulated team experiences that include focused processes and documentation related to technical communication to complete deliverables within a set timeframe. 

 

ENG 469 is an elective towards the Technical Communication BS and minor. 

ENG 569 is an elective towards the Technical Communication GC and MS. 

It is typically offered in the fall, alternating face-to-face and online sections. 

ENG 4/575: Editing Technical Publications (Gresbrink) 

Online Th, 7-8:30pm 

4 credits undergrad; 3 credits grad 

 

This course develops skills related to editing the content, organization, format, style, and mechanics of documents; managing the production cycle of documents; and discovering and learning computer and software applications for technical editing tasks. 

 

ENG 475 is required for the Tech Comm BS and is an elective towards the minor. 

ENG 575 is required for the Technical Communication GC and MS. 

It is typically offered in the fall. 

ENG 4/583: Writing About Health and Medicine (Bakke) 

Online M, 7-8:30pm 

4 credits undergrad; 3 credits grad  

 

This course addresses the skills required for technical communication within the context of health and medicine. Students will discuss typical audiences, purposes, and genres of health and medical communication. Students will adapt complex health and medical information for audiences with varying levels of knowledge, demonstrating awareness of audience analysis, visual design, plain language, and ethics. 

 

ENG 483 is an elective towards the Tech Comm BS and minor. 

ENG 583 is an elective towards the Tech Comm GC and MS. 

It is only offered in the fall. 

ENG 667: Content Strategy (Bakke) 

Online Asynchronous 

3 credits 

 

This course addresses the planning and execution of content through methodological approaches to data analysis and content development. This course surveys the planning, creation, and management of content within editorial development, experience design, and systems design. Students will explore the methods of content strategy to compile, extract, and develop meaningful content that uses multimodal tools for visualization. 

 

ENG 667 is required for the Tech Comm Graduate Certificate and MS.  

It is only offered in the fall.
