Language Credit by Examination
Minnesota State University, Mankato recognizes students may learn college-level material outside of the classroom. The University provides an opportunity for students to obtain college credit for these learning experiences.
Please keep in mind that prior-learning credits do not count toward the University’s residency requirements.
If you are interested in taking an exam for language credit, please follow the outlined steps below:
- Contact Us – Contact the program director of the language you want to test out of to see if credit by examination is a good option for you.
Program Directors:
- French: Dr. Evan Bibbee
- German: Dr. Nadja Kramer
- Scandinavian Studies: Dr. Rennesa Jessup
- Spanish: Dr. Alfredo Duplat
- Dakota and Chinese: Contact Department
- Paperwork – Complete Part 1. of the Credit for Prior Learning Form available here.
- Signatures – Bring your form to the Philosophy, Languages & Cultures' Administrative Assistant, Lauren Peterman, to help gather the appropriate signatures for Part II of the form.
- Payment – Take the form to the Cashier's Office to pay for the credits and completion of Part III of the form. The fee is $50 per credit hour. Return or email the form to Lauren Peterman once completed.
- Exam & Credits – Take the exam on the day and time determined by the department or the Program Director. Credits will be reflected on the DARS approximately three weeks after successfully taking the exam.
