About Social Studies
Minnesota State University, Mankato offers a challenging program designed to prepare students for teaching secondary social studies. The program draws upon faculty from nine academic departments (anthropology, economics, gender and women's studies, ethnic studies, geography, history, political science, psychology, sociology) and works with these departments and the College of Education to promote effective teaching practice for future and in-service teachers. Many opportunities are given to students to observe and practice social studies teaching in a secondary school setting.
The Minnesota State University, Mankato Social Studies Program is committed to preparing high quality professionals who will:
- Understand and explain clearly the content of the social sciences and history,
- Create and deliver meaningful, challenging, active, value-based, and integrative learning opportunities for young people so that they may better understand the human experience, and
- Encourage and enable young people to be engaged in building stronger local, national, and global communities.
