A listing of the most frequently asked questions about our dance program.
What are the admission requirements for the Dance Program?
To be admitted into the Dance Program, you must apply and be accepted to the University. Then, you'll need to participate in a placement audition in the Dance Program. A placement audition requires that you participate in a modern dance class and/or a ballet. The Dance faculty will then determine what level of dance technique (beginning, intermediate or advanced) you should be placed in, based on your skill level. Placement auditions occur the first week of class each semester.
What is the focus of your program?
The focus of the Dance Program is in contemporary modern dance. Several other dance forms are offered which include ballet, jazz, tap, dance improvisation, dance composition and Afro-Caribbean dance. There are also a variety of theory courses. Some examples include Dance History, World Dance and Dance Pedagogy.
Do I have to audition to be in the Dance program?

Can I become a Dance major or Dance minor without any previous experience?
You can become a Dance major or minor without any previous experience; however, in order to graduate with a Dance major you must rise to an advanced level in modern dance and intermediate level of ballet.
How many faculty members are in the Dance program?
There are two full-time faculty members in the Dance program and one or two adjunct faculty members. In addition, each semester a variety of guest artists from across the nation are invited to campus to work with Dance students. The guest artists are involved in a series of activities that include some or all of the following: teaching, performing and creating works for students.
What can I do with a degree in Dance?
There are several career paths that a student can pursue upon graduation. Some examples including performing; teaching in a variety of teaching environments (for example, private studios, recreation centers, after-school programs); pursuing an advanced degree in dance performance, therapy or education; or opening up a private studio.
What kind of studio space do you have?
The Dance program has four studio spaces, all with sprung wood floors.
Will I have the opportunity to perform?
Students have a variety of opportunities to perform. At the beginning of each semester, there are auditions for our Dance Concert that occurs at the end of each semester. Students can also audition for musical theatre productions that occur each semester (plus two during our professional summer stock theatre, Highland Summer Theatre).
Are there any Dance scholarships?
As an entering freshman, students can apply for a Freshman Talent Grant. Students may also apply for other scholarships within the Department of Theatre & Dance during the annual application period.
